How to show a COD fee in the Cash on Delivery option on Shopify

Updated 2 November 2026

Many stores add a small charge for Cash on Delivery to cover collection costs. Customers accept it far more readily when they see it before they choose COD than when it appears as a surprise.

What Shopify allows

Shopify doesn't let you attach a fee to a payment method. Stores usually handle the charge another way: building it into delivery charges, adding a separate fee product, or giving prepaid orders a small discount instead.

What you can do on any plan is change how the option is named at checkout, so the charge is clear before the customer picks it.

Show the fee with RuleStack

  1. Open RuleStack, click Add rule and choose “COD fee label”.
  2. Edit the new name, for example “Cash on Delivery (+₹50 fee)”.
  3. Optionally add a condition, for example only above ₹1,000 or only for some states.
  4. Save. Checkout now shows the new name.

Things to know

  • RuleStack changes the name only; it doesn't charge the fee. Make sure the amount in the name matches what you actually collect.
  • Pair it with “Prepaid first” to move UPI and card payments to the top.

Do it in a few clicks with RuleStack

Use the “COD fee label” template, change the numbers and save. Free plan available; paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.

Questions

Will the new name show in order emails?
Order details keep the original payment method name; the new name is shown at checkout.
Can I show different text for different carts?
Yes. Create two rules with different conditions; the higher rule in the list wins when both match.
