How to hide Cash on Delivery above an order amount on Shopify
Cash on Delivery brings in customers who don't want to pay upfront, but on large orders it is risky. A refused ₹8,000 parcel costs you forward and return shipping, packaging and days of stock sitting in transit.
Many stores keep COD for small orders and ask customers to prepay above a limit. This guide shows how to do that on Shopify.
Can Shopify do this on its own?
Shopify lets you add Cash on Delivery as a manual payment method, but it has no setting to show it only below an amount. Checkout pages can't be changed with theme code either.
Hiding a payment method based on the cart is done with a payment customization. Apps add these through Shopify Functions, which run inside Shopify's checkout, so they are fast and keep working even if the app has a problem.
Set a COD limit with RuleStack
- Install RuleStack from the Shopify App Store and open it from Apps.
- Click Add rule, then choose the template “Hide COD above an amount”.
- Set the amount, for example 5000. The rule hides payment methods whose name contains “Cash on Delivery” when the cart subtotal is above it.
- Click Save. The rule is live at checkout within a few seconds.
- Optional: open the rule and use “Test this rule” with a ₹6,000 cart to see exactly what checkout will show.
Tips that reduce failed deliveries further
- Tell customers early: add a line like “COD available up to ₹5,000” on product and cart pages, so nobody is surprised at checkout.
- Move prepaid methods (UPI, cards) to the top with the “Prepaid first” template.
- Combine with a pincode rule if some areas have high returns. Rules can be combined with ALL or ANY conditions.
- Use the matched-orders count on each rule to see how many orders it affected.

Questions
- Does this work on all Shopify plans?
- Yes for Cash on Delivery and other manual or alternative payment methods. Shopify only lets apps hide credit cards and wallets such as Shop Pay on Shopify Plus stores.
- Will customers see an error?
- No. Cash on Delivery simply doesn't appear as an option on carts above your limit; the other payment methods stay.
- Is the limit before or after shipping?
- The template uses the cart subtotal. You can switch the condition to the cart total (including shipping and tax) in the rule.
