How to set a minimum order value on Shopify
Small orders can cost more to pack and ship than they earn. A minimum order value, for example ₹499, keeps every order worth sending.
This guide explains why the usual theme tricks don't hold, and how to enforce a minimum at checkout itself.
Can Shopify do this on its own?
Shopify has no built-in minimum order setting. A common workaround is theme code that disables the checkout button in the cart, but customers can skip the cart with Buy it now buttons, express payment buttons or a direct checkout link.
A checkout validation runs inside checkout, so it applies however the customer gets there.
Set a minimum order with RuleStack
- Open RuleStack, click Add rule and choose “Minimum order value”.
- Set the amount and edit the message customers see, for example “The minimum order is ₹499. Add a little more to check out.”
- Save. Checkout shows your message and stops orders below the amount; customers can still add items and continue.
Things to know
- Customers can change their cart freely; the check happens when they reach checkout.
- Express wallets that skip checkout may not show your message, though the order is still checked.
- Checkout blocks are part of the Pro plan, which has a 14-day free trial.
Do it in a few clicks with RuleStack
Use the “Minimum order value” template, change the numbers and save. Free plan available; paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.
Questions
- Can I set a maximum quantity instead?
- Yes. The “Max quantity per product” template stops checkout when one product is above the quantity you set.
- Can the minimum apply only to some customers?
- Yes. Add a condition such as customer tag or shipping country, so wholesale customers or international orders get their own minimum.
