How to disable Cash on Delivery for specific pincodes on Shopify

Updated 2 November 2026

Couriers don't collect cash everywhere, and some areas send back far more COD parcels than others. Offering COD there leads to cancelled shipments and return costs.

This guide shows how to keep COD for most of India while turning it off for the pincodes you choose.

Can Shopify do this on its own?

No. Shopify shipping zones work by country and state, and payment methods can't be limited by pincode in Shopify's settings. Some courier checkouts check pincode serviceability, but Shopify's own checkout needs a payment customization app.

Turn off COD for pincodes with RuleStack

  1. Open RuleStack and click Add rule, then choose “Hide COD for pincodes”.
  2. Paste your pincodes, separated by commas or one per line. Most couriers let you export non-serviceable or high-RTO pincodes as a spreadsheet; copy that column.
  3. To cover whole areas, use “starts with” instead of “is one of”: the prefix 40 covers every pincode that begins with 40.
  4. Save, then test a cart with one of the pincodes using “Test this rule”.

Things to know

  • The pincode is known once the customer enters their address. Before that, checkout shows all methods; as soon as the address is filled in, COD disappears for listed pincodes.
  • One rule set holds about 1,300 pincodes. Use prefixes for large areas to stay well inside that.
  • Pincode lists and prefixes are part of the Pro plan; the Free plan covers cart value, weight, country, products and more.

Do it in a few clicks with RuleStack

Use the “Hide COD for pincodes” template, change the numbers and save. Free plan available; paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.

Questions

Can I block delivery to a pincode completely?
Yes. The “Don't ship to some pincodes” template stops checkout for those pincodes with your own message, for example “We don't deliver here yet”.
Does it work for ZIP codes outside India?
Yes. The same rule matches postal and ZIP codes in any country.
How do I update the list?
Open the rule, edit the pincodes and save. Changes apply at checkout within seconds.
